Requesting the execution of a person constitutes a direct and irreparable violation of the right to life, a fundamental principle of human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and multiple international treaties that states, including the United States, are obligated to respect.

The death penalty is not justice. It is institutionalized revenge. It does not deter crime, repair harm, much less build peace or reconciliation. On the contrary, it instills more hatred, normalizes state-sponsored violence, and perpetuates a cycle of injustice.

Instead of seeking solutions that violate human rights, governments must embrace restorative justice, alternative punishments, and processes that guarantee human dignity. No circumstance, no matter how serious, can justify the State assuming the role of executioner.

We urgently call on the United States authorities and the international community to reject the death penalty as a measure, reaffirming that the right to life is inviolable and absolute. True leadership is not measured by the ability to punish with death, but by the will to build societies where justice goes hand in hand with dignity and human rights.

Lumara Human Rights
For life, for dignity, against the death penalty.
